Blu ray.com is an independent site that lists each disc edition with its street date and full disc specs, down to the region code. Use it to compare editions and read disc reviews. Then confirm the date and price on the store listing before you buy.

How to read a blu ray.com edition page

Every edition page follows the same layout. Take The Transformers: The Movie 35th Anniversary 4K edition as an example. Its page lists:

1. Header line: the label, film year, runtime, rating and street date. Here that is Shout Factory, 1986, 84 minutes, PG and September 28, 2021
2. Video: HEVC, native 4K, Dolby Vision and HDR10, and both 1.33:1 and 1.85:1 aspect ratios
3. Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 in English
4. Discs: a two-disc set, one 4K disc and one Blu-ray
5. Playback: 4K region free, Blu-ray Region A

Reading the review scores

A blu ray.com review scores the disc, not just the film. Each part gets its own rating: the picture, the sound and the extras. A 4K title may show two video scores, one for the 4K disc and one for the Blu-ray.

There is also a user rating for the film itself, based on member votes. Keep the two apart. A great film can sit on a weak disc, and an average film can get a reference-quality transfer.

Read the written review for the reason behind a score. It often notes whether a 4K disc uses a new scan, which the score alone will not tell you.

Spotting the right edition

Many films have five or more editions: plain Blu-ray, 4K, SteelBooks, store exclusives and imports. On blu ray.com they sit side by side. A few checks narrow them down fast:

• Same transfer, different case? If two editions list identical video and audio lines, you are paying for packaging.
• New scan? A 4K edition with a much higher bitrate and HDR usually means a new master.
• Region? Imports often put a Region B Blu-ray in the box, even when the 4K disc is region free.
• Extras? The review lists bonus features, which can be the only real difference between editions.

The forum is where collectors compare pressings, report disc errors and swap news before it reaches the main site. Search it by title when a review leaves a question open, such as whether a later pressing fixed a problem.

The collection tool lets you add editions you own or want from each edition page. Over time it becomes a record of which version you bought. That helps when a new edition comes out and you want to know if it is worth the upgrade.
