IGN reported the December 4, 2012 date when Warner announced it. The same report noted a limited edition set with a Bat Cowl statue.
Christopher Nolan shot parts of The Dark Knight Rises with IMAX cameras. On disc, those scenes open up from a wide 2.40:1 frame to a taller 1.78:1 frame that fills a 16:9 TV.
Warner said the Blu-ray used a hybrid master to copy the mix of IMAX and 35mm the film had in theaters. It described nearly an hour of IMAX footage. The 4K disc keeps the same shifting ratio. The DVD in the combo pack does not, and shows the film in standard widescreen.
If the frame changes shape partway through a scene, your disc and TV are working as intended.
The 4K edition adds a native 4K picture with HDR10. On a good 4K TV, that means more fine detail and a wider range of light and dark. It matters most in the night scenes and the large IMAX set pieces.
The audio stays close to the Blu-ray. Most 4K editions list DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 in English. There is no Dolby Atmos track on the listings we checked.
If you already own the Blu-ray and watch on a 1080p TV, the 4K disc will not change much for you. The upgrade pays off only with a 4K player and a 4K TV.
SteelBook editions have come out in several countries. The Blu-ray copy inside some imports is Region B, including the Danish 4K SteelBook. The 4K disc itself is listed as region free.
