Film Collector Guides: Titles, Awards and Disc Editions

The short answer

Find the title first, then compare the actual edition. A film's award history, a streaming listing and a photograph of its cover cannot establish what is on a particular disc.

Use these references to identify a film and decide which details to check on a physical copy. Some entries have a full guide; others have a short note below. None of the title listings promises that a particular edition is in stock.

For metal packaging, the steelbook guide explains the case format and identifies sold-out retailer and boutique editions.

Film and career guides

For cassette editions, our VHS collecting guide identifies documented covers, boxes and studio-marked seals.

For discontinued disc editions, the rare Blu-ray edition guide identifies named Criterion, Olive and Twilight Time releases.

For the same checks across any title, follow our Blu-ray and 4K edition comparison guide. Record the publisher, barcode, country, region, cut, audio and subtitles. Keep film facts in a separate field from disc specifications.

Three more titles to look for

Jack and Jill vs. the World. The Harvard Crimson's contemporary review identifies this romantic comedy by Vanessa Parise. Use the full title when searching; a listing shortened to Jack and Jill may point to a different film. Ask for the disc label and back cover before choosing a used copy.

Dennis the Menace. Filmdienst's record identifies Nick Castle's 1993 film with Mason Gamble as Dennis and Walter Matthau as George Wilson. Those credits distinguish this feature from other adaptations. Match them with the year on the package; Warner Bros.' title page supplies the studio's title reference.

Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper. Universal's official release page lists the film as a DVD and includes it in larger Barbie collections. If you choose a collection, read its complete title list and check that this film is included. A princess-themed cover is not enough.

More film and television title entries

Use a film's year, director or credited cast to match the work. Then compare the edition separately. The sources below identify films or documented releases; the details of a particular pressing belong in its own collection record.

Title Film reference and edition check
The Company Men John Wells Productions lists Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones as its stars. Match these credits before comparing editions.
Departures The Academy's 2009 record names Japan's Departures as the Foreign Language Film winner. Check the translated title and languages on a physical edition separately.
Once Upon a Time in China Criterion's Blu-ray collection groups the series' films in one set. Compare its film-by-film contents with a single-title offer.
Terminator Salvation Filmdienst identifies McG's 2009 film with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington. Its German Blu-ray record includes two cuts; verify the versions on your edition.
The Time Traveler's Wife Filmdienst lists Robert Schwentke's 2009 film with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. Use those credits to distinguish it from a television listing.
Admiral Filmdienst's Admiral: Warrior, Hero, Legend record identifies the 2008 Russian film directed by Andrei Kravchuk. Match the year and director when a translated title is shortened.
Last Action Hero Sony's official title page lists DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD. Check which format a specific offer actually contains.
Scarlett Filmdienst's Scarlett 1–4 record credits director John Erman and stars Joanne Whalley-Kilmer and Timothy Dalton. Check that all parts are included in a disc set.
Dog Gone / Diamond Dog AlloCiné's DVD record identifies Diamond Dog: chien milliardaire as Dog Gone, directed by Mark Stouffer. Match those credits when comparing alternate-title packages.
Cutthroat Island Filmdienst identifies Renny Harlin's 1995 pirate film with Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. Keep edition language and region markings with that release.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Lucasfilm's Episode V page provides an official title reference. For a boxed collection, check both the included films and the version named for each.
Twelve Monkeys Universal's 12 Monkeys record identifies Terry Gilliam's 1995 film with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, and lists Blu-ray and DVD. Match the title's words or numeral with those credits.
The Proposal Filmdienst identifies Anne Fletcher's 2009 comedy with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. The cast and year distinguish it from another film with the same title.
Con Air The 1998 Academy record lists the film's sound and song nominations. Those nominations do not rate the sound on a particular disc.
Poseidon Filmdienst identifies Wolfgang Petersen's 2006 film with Josh Lucas and Kurt Russell. Match those credits with Warner Bros.' title reference before comparing editions.

Actors and films to collect

Burt Reynolds. Filmdienst's Boogie Nights record credits him as Jack Horner in the 1997 film and lists DVD editions. The Academy's 1998 ceremony record confirms his Supporting Actor nomination. Follow the physical-media release schedule for edition announcements.

Dennis Hopper. Sony's Easy Rider record names him as a star and director and lists Blu-ray and DVD. Use the disc-edition research guide to compare the exact release.

Jack Nicholson. Sony's Easy Rider cast record also names Nicholson in this film, available in its catalog on Blu-ray and DVD. The release calendar helps you follow edition announcements.

Melinda Clarke. Filmdienst's Killer Tongue record credits her as Candy and lists a German DVD. For another creature-horror reference, see The Hive's film and disc guide.

Cases, playback and release planning

If you need a replacement case, compare disc cases and cover protection while keeping the original printed insert. The case dimensions and shelf planner helps you measure the collection you actually own; the DVD bookshelf and media-tower comparisons cover storage choices.

For playback, start with the disc-player selection guides or our DVD-player comparisons. Confirm the exact model's format and region support in its manual. When planning future purchases, use the DVD and Blu-ray release schedule and then verify each announced edition with its publisher.
