Case sizes, shelf space and disc compatibility

Use the measurements below as starting points, then measure your own cases and shelf. Packaging varies by product, country, slipcover and set.

Case dimensions at a glance

Cases stand upright with their spines facing out. The spine thickness consumes the shelf run; the case face width is the shelf depth, and case height is the vertical clearance. These are individual published examples, not universal format standards.

Nominal package dimensions; width × height × spine thickness

The cited Blu-ray reseller example is 13 mm; the cited SteelBook specification is 15 mm. Do not collapse those different examples into one “standard Blu-ray” measurement. Slipcovers, box sets, multi-disc cases and regional packages need their own measurement.

Estimate shelf capacity

Enter the usable horizontal run of each shelf, measured inside the supports. The calculator packs the thickest cases first and reports the actual per-shelf counts. Its first-fit allocation is a practical estimate, not a guaranteed optimal packing solution.

Cases to store and their spine thickness

Formula: for one format, the per-shelf limit is floor(usable run ÷ spine thickness). For a mixed shelf, each case occupies its own thickness; the tool places whole cases and never converts face width or height into shelf run.

Check disc, player and display compatibility

A disc must first be readable by the player. Region and video output are separate checks: a region mismatch can stop playback, while a lower-resolution or non-HDR display can still show a supported disc at reduced output. Select only capabilities confirmed in the exact player manual and disc packaging.

For source checks, consult the official Sony UBP-X700 manuals page or the manual for your exact player model. A manual for one model cannot establish another model’s supported discs, region behaviour, output resolution or HDR formats. If a specification is absent or ambiguous, treat it as unknown.

Sources, method and limits

Dimensions are copied from the individually linked packaging references above and the retained research record checked September 27, 2026. Case sizes are nominal examples, not manufacturing tolerances or format guarantees. Measure thick collections, slipcovers and box sets directly.

The shelf planner’s buffer is reserved empty space, applied to usable run before packing. For mixed formats, it sorts cases by entered thickness and places whole cases into each shelf run. Its shelf count is a best-fit-first estimate; unusual shelf obstructions, dividers, bowing, clearance needs and odd-shaped sets are outside the model.

The compatibility check keeps three questions apart: can the player read this disc format; do disc and player regions match when region coding applies; and what picture can the player/display combination output? HDR is assessed separately from resolution. It does not assume every 4K disc is region-free, every Blu-ray player reads every DVD, or that a display’s HDR label covers every HDR format.

Identify the film before measuring its edition

A collection can mix single films, anniversary packages and multi-film boxes. The film collector reference list helps you identify the title first, then check the actual disc and case. These guides give a starting point for the titles they cover:

Use the measurements of the package you own in the tools above. A film title alone cannot establish the thickness of its case or the number of discs inside.
