A steelbook is a metal disc case with printed art. These eight retail and boutique editions have different cases and disc packages. Each section says how to match a listing to its edition.

Dune: 2022 Best Buy 4K steelbook, US

• The 2022 US Best Buy steelbook pairs 4K with Blu-ray. High-Def Digest includes it in its January 2022 release guide.

• The package image shows an orange sun above dunes on the front. Its top band reads 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Code.

• Other Dune steelbooks are mixed in the strip below. Match the orange-sun cover and 4K format band to this Best Buy release.

Reservoir Dogs: 2022 Best Buy 4K steelbook, US

• This is the 2022 US Best Buy 4K + Blu-ray exclusive. High-Def Digest dates the package to November 15, 2022.

• High-Def Digest describes an illustrated profile with a missing ear. The clear plastic slip supplies the bloody ear, so the slip is part of the artwork.

• A bare metal case without the clear ear slip is missing part of this package. The slip completes the profile artwork; it is more than a plain protective cover.

Alien: 2019 Best Buy 40th Anniversary 4K steelbook, US

• This 2019 US Best Buy 4K steelbook appears in HD Report’s release list. The maker’s 40th Anniversary page documents the matching cover design used for the European release.

• The pale cover shows a cracked egg with a green glow, with ALIEN above it. The 40th Anniversary wording identifies the release family.

• The strip includes imported and Blu-ray-only Alien cases too. Match the 40th Anniversary 4K package and country details, since the maker also lists European editions with this artwork.

Jaws: 2020 Best Buy 4K steelbook, US

• The 2020 US Best Buy steelbook is a 45th Anniversary 4K + Blu-ray package. Reel Nerds names this Best Buy exclusive and shows the case with both discs.

• The blue front shows an open-jawed shark beneath JAWS. The swimmer appears on the back cover, as shown in the linked package image.

• Check the 4K wrapper; other Jaws cases use the same poster.

The Thing: 2021 Best Buy 4K steelbook, US

• Blu-ray.com dates this US Best Buy 4K + Blu-ray steelbook to September 7, 2021.

• The gray-blue cover shows a twisted creature beneath the white title. The retail format band names the 4K disc package.

• Mondo and Play.com also issued steelbooks of the 1982 film. The 2011 movie shares its title, so the director and film date matter.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit: 2015 Zavvi Gold Blu-ray steelbook, UK

• Zavvi’s UK 2015 Gold Edition is a one-disc Blu-ray. The store lists the Gold Edition as sold out.

• Its gold-colored case distinguishes this variant from Zavvi’s earlier steelbook. Blu-ray.com dates it to May 25, 2015.

• The strip mixes Zavvi’s earlier Blu-ray case with its Gold Edition. Match the gold-colored artwork; Best Buy’s later 4K case is another release.

WALL-E: 2015 Zavvi Pixar Collection Blu-ray steelbook, UK

• The UK 2015 Blu-ray is The Pixar Collection #12. Zavvi's page for this 3,000-copy edition says sold out.

• The artwork divides WALL-E and EVE across a blue panel and a yellow-orange panel. Blu-ray.com lists the May 25, 2015 release as a two-disc Zavvi exclusive.

• The listings also return gray Blu-ray and purple 4K cases. For this Zavvi package, match the blue-and-yellow artwork and Pixar Collection #12 details.

Tenet: 2021 Manta Lab ME32 4K steelbook

• Manta Lab’s ME32, released in 2021, includes 4K and Blu-ray. Collectong shows the full-slip package as sold out.

• The case has a gloss finish and a debossed title. A Manta Lab exclusive sticker and numbered slip help distinguish this package from a bare retail case.

• Full slip, lenticular, double lenticular and one-click are variants of ME32 in Collectong’s Tenet catalog. The strip also shows retail Tenet steelbooks; match the Manta sticker and slip.

How to read these listings

Match the named release by its cover, discs and barcode. Look for the original wrapper or slip. Read the seller’s notes for dents and spine cuts. Check for rust, missing discs and lost extras too.

A sealed copy may be listed as new. That does not mean its original store still stocks it. Compare the full cost with shipping. An asking price is the seller’s offer, not a completed sale.

Frequently asked questions

What is a steelbook?

SteelBook is a registered trademark. The official FAQ names Envases as the IP owner and Scanavo as its sales and marketing partner. Other companies make metal cases too.

Are all steelbooks limited editions?

No. Some runs are small, such as Zavvi’s 3,000 copies of WALL-E, but a metal case does not tell you the run size.

Are SteelBook cases only used for movies?

No. The maker’s FAQ also lists video games and music among the uses for the format. A case advertised as a SteelBook does not by itself tell you what kind of media it holds.

What is the difference between embossing and debossing?

The maker’s finishing guide describes embossing as raising parts of the artwork. Debossing recesses them, so a raised title and a recessed title are different case details.
