Blu-ray Movies: New Releases, Catalog Upgrades and How to Pick an Edition

Buying blu ray movies in 2026 is easier if you split them into three groups. There are new releases, catalog titles with fresh restorations, and boutique editions made for collectors. Each group rewards a different kind of check before you buy.

Blu ray movies still ship every week in the US. New studio films arrive a few months after theaters, catalog films come back with new 4K scans, and boutique labels like Criterion and Arrow release restored editions with extras. Read the edition listing before you buy, since the same film can come in very different versions.

New blu ray movies this month

Here are some of the new films that reached disc in September 2026, from the DVDsReleaseDates.com calendar:

• September 8: Supergirl and Batman: Knightfall Part 1 (DVD, Blu-ray and 4K)
• September 22: Toy Story 5 (DVD and 4K), Scary Movie and Evil Dead Burn (DVD, Blu-ray and 4K), and The Secret Agent (DVD, Blu-ray and 4K)

Not every new film gets a standard Blu-ray. Toy Story 5, for example, is listed on DVD and 4K. If you only own a 1080p player, check that a Blu-ray edition exists before you preorder.

Catalog blu ray movies with a real upgrade

Older films keep coming back in new editions. The question is whether the picture actually changed. Three titles show the range:

• Beetlejuice: every 1080p Blu-ray reissue shares one older master. The 4K edition from 2020 adds native 4K, HDR10, the original 1.85:1 frame and Dolby Atmos. See our Beetlejuice Blu-ray guide.

The pattern holds across most catalog titles. A new case or a new cover rarely means a new picture. A new scan, a new HDR grade or a new audio mix does.

Boutique-label blu ray movies

Boutique labels license older films and release them with restorations, essays and extras. Criterion, Arrow, Indicator and Warner Archive all have titles on the fall 2026 calendar. Warner Archive alone lists 12 Blu-rays on October 27.

These editions often cost more and sometimes sell out. If a boutique title matters to you, preorder it once the label confirms the date.

How to read a blu ray movie listing

Every edition page on Blu-ray.com follows the same pattern. Look for five lines:

1. Video: the codec and resolution, such as 1080p or native 4K, plus any HDR format
2. Aspect ratio: whether the disc keeps the film's original frame
3. Audio: the main track, such as DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 or Dolby Atmos
4. Discs: how many discs, and whether a DVD or digital code is included
5. Playback: the region code for each disc

Blu-ray versus 4K Blu-ray movies

A standard Blu-ray is 1080p. It plays in any Blu-ray or 4K player. A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is 2160p with HDR, and it needs a 4K player and a 4K TV to show the difference.

Picking blu ray movies for a new collection

If you are starting a collection, begin with the films you rewatch most. A disc earns its shelf space by being played. Then add titles where the disc offers something streaming does not, such as a lossless audio track, a commentary or a restored cut.

Verdict on buying blu ray movies

Blu ray movies still arrive every Tuesday, from new studio films to boutique restorations. Buy new releases once a street date is confirmed. For catalog titles, pay more only for a new scan, HDR grade or audio mix. For boutique editions, preorder early if the title matters to you.
