Blu ray news moves fast in the fall, when studios and labels line up their holiday releases. The trick is knowing which source to check for which kind of news. An announcement, a street date and a review each tend to show up in a different place first.

Blu ray news is easiest to follow with three kinds of source: a broad news site like Blu-ray.com, a weekly release calendar like High-Def Digest, and the label's own site for confirmation. This fall's big stories include new Criterion 4K titles, a Transformers 40th Anniversary set and packed boutique weeks.

Where to follow blu ray news

Label sites fill the last gap. Criterion, Arrow, Shout Factory and others post their own slates, often before the calendars catch up.

The biggest blu ray news on the fall 2026 calendar

These stories stand out on the High-Def Digest calendars, checked on September 25, 2026:

• Criterion's 4K push: The Complete Kubrick and The Silence of the Lambs (October 20), Frankenstein (October 27) and KPop Demon Hunters (November 3) all list 4K editions from Criterion.

• Warner Archive's big week: 12 Warner Archive Blu-rays are listed for October 27, including Horror of Dracula, which also gets a 4K edition.

• Holiday catalog titles: Gone with the Wind (November 3) and Hook 35th Anniversary SteelBook (November 17) are on the 4K calendar.

How a blu ray announcement becomes a release

Most titles follow the same path. A studio or label announces the title. Stores open preorders, sometimes with a provisional date. The release calendars add the title once a date is set. Reviews appear close to street day.

That is why the same title can show up with different dates in different places. Trust the label's announcement and the big calendars. Treat a lone store listing as a guess until one of those confirms it.

Reading news about a 4K upgrade

A 4K announcement does not always mean a new restoration. Look for the words "new 4K scan" or "new restoration" in the press release. Shout Factory's 2021 Transformers release, for example, was announced as a "new 4K transfer from original film elements."

If the release notes say nothing about a new scan, wait for a review. A 4K disc made from an older master may look only a little better than the Blu-ray you already own.
