The 30th Anniversary Blu-ray came out in 2016, before the 35th Anniversary discs. Pick it up only if you collect every anniversary release.
The title causes some mix-ups. "Transformers" alone usually points to the live-action films that began in 2007. The 1986 film is the animated feature, spun off from the original TV cartoon, and its full title is The Transformers: The Movie.
The discs below are all the 1986 animated film. If a listing shows live-action stills or a 2007 date, it is the wrong movie.
Shout Factory has released the film on disc in the US since 2016. Per Blu-ray.com listings:
Shout Factory's 2021 announcement on Blu-ray.com described a "new 4K transfer from original film elements." It also said the 4K combo pairs the widescreen 4K version with the HD full-frame version on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray + DVD combo put full frame on the Blu-ray and widescreen on the DVD.
That split matters. If you want widescreen in high definition, the 4K disc is the way to get it.
Two new discs are coming, both from Shout Factory, per Transformers.tv:
The High-Def Digest 4K calendar also lists the SteelBook for November 17, 2026. It is the first disc of this film listed with a Dolby Atmos track.
A new theatrical run through Fathom opened on September 17, 2026, according to Transformers.tv. The same site found on September 21 that no US subscription service carried the film. You can rent or buy it digitally from Amazon, Apple TV and Fandango At Home.
Digital prices and availability change often, so check the store before you rent.
Buy the 35th Anniversary 4K set now if you want the best picture today. The 40th Anniversary SteelBook lists the same 4K video specs. What it adds is Dolby Atmos and a new SteelBook case.
