Does 360 Play Blu Ray? The Xbox 360 Answer and What Works Instead
The short answer
No. The Xbox 360 has a DVD drive, not a Blu-ray drive, so it cannot play Blu-ray or 4K discs. Its HD DVD add-on played HD DVD only. To watch Blu-ray, use a Blu-ray player, a later console with a Blu-ray drive, or a computer with an external Blu-ray drive.

Does 360 play blu ray? No. The Xbox 360 has a DVD drive, not a Blu-ray drive, so no Blu-ray movie or 4K disc will play in it. Here is why, and the easiest ways to watch your Blu-rays instead.
The Xbox 360 plays DVDs, CDs and its own game discs, but its drive cannot read Blu-ray. The old HD DVD add-on played HD DVD only. A standalone Blu-ray player is the simplest way to watch Blu-ray on the same TV.
Why the Xbox 360 cannot play Blu-ray
It comes down to the drive. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005 with a DVD drive built for its game discs, DVD movies and CDs. A Blu-ray disc needs a drive with a blue-violet laser, and the 360 never had one.
No software update can change that. The limit is in the hardware, so no firmware or app will add Blu-ray playback.
The HD DVD add-on, and why it did not help
During the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray, Microsoft backed HD DVD. It sold an external HD DVD player that plugged into the Xbox 360.
That add-on played HD DVD movies only. It could not read Blu-ray. When HD DVD lost the format war, the add-on lost its purpose.
In March 2008, a Microsoft spokesperson told the press there were "no plans to introduce Blu-ray" for the 360, as TechPowerUp reported. No Blu-ray add-on ever came out.
What discs the Xbox 360 does play
The 360 still handles several disc types well:
- Xbox 360 game discs, plus some original Xbox games through backward play
- DVD movies, from Region 1 in the US
- Audio CDs
If your collection is mostly DVD, the 360 still works as a DVD player. Since a 2006 system update it can upscale DVDs to 1080p over HDMI, component or VGA. It just cannot read a Blu-ray.
If the 360 does not play blu ray, what does?
You have three simple options.

A later console with a disc drive. Newer Xbox and PlayStation consoles with disc drives play Blu-ray. The digital-only versions have no drive at all, so check the model name before you buy.

How to tell which console you own
Model names can be confusing across Xbox generations. The Xbox 360 came in several versions over its life, including the original model and later slimmer redesigns. None of them has a Blu-ray drive.
If your console says "Xbox 360" on the front or in the system settings, it plays DVDs but not Blu-ray. If it is a later Xbox with a disc slot, check the model's specs for Blu-ray playback. A digital-only model has no disc slot at all.
The same check applies if you buy a used console for movies. Look for a disc drive, then confirm it lists Blu-ray playback, not just game discs.
What about ripping a Blu-ray to play on the 360?
Some guides suggest ripping a Blu-ray to a video file and playing it on the 360 from a USB drive. That can work for discs you own, but it takes time and software, and the file may need converting to a format the 360 supports.

Keeping the 360 for games
None of this means the 360 has to go. It still plays its own game library and some original Xbox games. Many people keep it for games and add a Blu-ray player next to it for movies. Both connect to the same TV, and a Blu-ray player takes little shelf space.
