Disney VHS Value: Eight Editions to Recognize in 2026

Disney VHS value starts with the issue, not the film title. Compare the Home Video Club, gift-box, early Home Video and official PAL releases below. A familiar Disney case does not establish a special edition.

The strips show current asking prices on eBay, and asking is not selling. Search results may include other releases; match the named issue before buying.

VHS tapes worth money: edition guide · Black Diamond Disney VHS

Cars: 2007 Disney Home Video Club VHS

• The edition: CGC says members of the Disney Home Video Club got an exclusive VHS release of Cars in 2007.

• What to check: It was a VHS made for club members, so a DVD or a home recording is not it.

Dumbo: 1983 Walt Disney Home Video gift-wrapped big box

• The edition: WDW Magazine describes a sealed 1983 gift-wrapped big-box Dumbo sold at a Heritage auction.

• The marker: Look for the oversized box and gift wrapping together. An ordinary Dumbo clamshell is a different package.

• The common mix-up: Most copies listed in our check were later clamshell releases; we found no 1983 gift box.

Tron: Early Walt Disney Home Video VHS

• The edition: WDW Magazine says collectors look for early copies of Tron and The Black Hole, and that the exact release and packaging matter.

• The marker: Compare the package and release details. The source does not give a complete first-print checklist for Tron.

• The common mix-up: A later reissue is not an early copy just because its cover gives the film's original date.

The Black Hole: 1980 Walt Disney Home Video initial issue

• The edition: Wikipedia's release history lists The Black Hole among the initial 1980 VHS sales, with a reissue in December 1983. WDW Magazine also names early copies as collector examples.

• The marker: Early cassettes were marked either For Rental Only or For Sale Only, according to the release history.

• The common mix-up: A 1983 reissue is not the initial 1980 issue. The film's copyright date does not separate these video releases.

The Love Bug: 1980 Walt Disney Home Video initial issue

• The edition: Wikipedia's release history lists The Love Bug among the initial 1980 VHS sales, with a reissue in November 1985.

• The marker: Early cassettes were marked either For Rental Only or For Sale Only, according to the release history.

• The common mix-up: Our listing check found no clearly identified initial 1980 issue.

Pete's Dragon: 1980 Walt Disney Home Video initial issue

• The edition: Wikipedia's release history lists Pete's Dragon among the initial 1980 VHS sales, followed by a reissue in October 1986.

• The marker: Early cassettes were marked either For Rental Only or For Sale Only, according to the release history.

• The common mix-up: A 1986 reissue is a different release. Check the video date and cassette label.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks: 1980 Walt Disney Home Video initial issue

• The edition: Wikipedia's release history lists Bedknobs and Broomsticks among the initial 1980 VHS sales, followed by reissues in 1985 and 1986.

• The marker: Early cassettes were marked either For Rental Only or For Sale Only, according to the release history.

• The common mix-up: Most copies in our listing check were later releases; we found no clearly identified initial 1980 issue.

Song of the South: Official international PAL Disney VHS

• The edition: WDW Magazine says Song of the South never had a standard US VHS release, though official PAL tapes came out in some other countries. Bootleg copies also circulate.

• The marker: PAL is the overseas format. WDW says a PAL tape may not play in a standard US VCR, so check that your player handles PAL.

• The common mix-up: Check the Disney label and PAL marking; a seller calling a tape official does not prove it is.

FAQ

Does grading guarantee a sale?

WDW Magazine warns that grading, shipping and insurance costs can outweigh what an ordinary tape brings. Compare completed sales before paying for grading; a holder does not replace edition identification or guarantee a buyer.

Should I group common Disney tapes together?

WDW suggests researching unusual copies first and considering lots for common tapes. Separate a club issue, early box or claimed promotional release for identification, then compare lots with similar contents and shipping.

Is an old cassette safe to play?

WDW advises checking for mold, cracked plastic, loose tape and water damage before playback. Do not put a moldy cassette in a VCR; store tapes upright in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

Will an official Song of the South import play on a US VCR?

WDW says official tapes were PAL releases for other countries, and that a PAL tape may not play in a standard US VCR. Check that your player supports PAL before you buy.
